Lighting, if done well in a space is hardly ever noticed. It is when lighting is not done properly that people notice. If you’ve ever found yourself saying “this room is too dark” or “I really need a reading lamp over there” or “I hate the color of this lighting” then chances are you could use a lighting makeover. Here are a few keys things to consider when trying to achieve great lighting in your home:
- You should have layers of lighting to serve different purposes. For example, in a living room you will often have one overhead light that is great for general lighting purposes. You should also then have at least one floor lamp, possibly a few depending on the size and layout of the space. Floor lamps are great for adding light to dark corners as well as ambiance to a space. Table lamps are an additonal lamp type that add another layer to the lighting in a living room. Table lamps also serve as great task lighting for reading. By having all of these lights on at once you create a warm inviting space perfect for entertaining. By just having one or two lamps on you create a more calm space perfect for relaxing or watching your favorite TV show.
- You should have a lighting triangle. What this means is the lamps in a room should create a triangle. This helps ensure the room is well lit and also creates balance in the lighting. Here is an example of a great lighting triangle in a bedroom:
- Your lighting should make a statement. Lighting is a great place to add an element of surprise and fun in any room. Whether you go with a bright colored ceramic base or a non-traditional design, or both, let your lighting be interesting and artistic. Here is a great example:
